Be Ready to Harness Inspiration
9/8/24
--------------------------------------------------Mindset--------------------
My kids and my wife (who’s a teacher) started a new school year last week. This time of year always gives me a sense of starting something new – an opportunity for new projects. For me this time of year provides a lot of creative energy that I’m always anxious with anticipation to harness.
The realization of anything creative requires one to regularly engage in being creative (even forced creative exercises sometimes), to allow one’s self the openness necessary to recognize the sudden strike of inspiration when it hits, and being ready to pounce on it.
Often in the Fall I get a build up of creative energy that I haven’t yet found a project or outlet toward which to direct it, so I anxiously pace around the house feeling antsy with anticipation. I literally feel like I’m vibrating with positive creative energy that leaves me feeling outwardly down and depressed to others that see me. Down and depressed because I don’t know how to direct my creative energy at that moment. That “all dressed up with nowhere to go” feeling is depressing when I think about that abundance of creative energy possibly going to waste – it’s a fleeting resource that I don’t want to squander.
The thing is, at this point in my life, I realize that this pent up creative energy with no outlet happens to me every Fall. I get so focused on it though, because once I can provide an outlet for that creative energy it often results in some really great artistic work that has a positive impact on me and others…and that’s why I’m so concerned with it potentially evaporating into the ether.
One way I’ve learned over the years to help break through the creative dam is to get back to basics and revisit other creative outlets that have consistently helped me feel better and energized enough to be open to other creative inspirations. Things like doing live music performances, recording music, drawing, writing. These are all things I do normally on a regular basis, but when I’m anticipating a big inspiring burst those consistent activities put me in the mindset to be a receptor for more powerful inspiring forces.
And that’s really the point of today’s newsletter: Be consistent in the little daily exercises that you know position you to be open to the big payoff opportunities when they arise. Doing so will help you to not only spot those bigger opportunities, but definitely recognize them when they come along so you can harness them.
