The value of people and things

How are you?

We had some bad storms recently that brought on tornadoes and very high winds. The result was a lot of downed trees, and even some damage to our home as debris hit it. The good news though, is no one was hurt. Things...objects, can be fixed/replaced...people, not so much, so I’m grateful.

It’s always humbling to have a force bigger than yourself, or one you just can’t control, whip through your life leaving you cut down, even just a bit.At least for me, it makes me reflect and examine what’s important to me, and ask myself, what do I place value on in my life?

When all is said and done, the spiritual and people relationships in my life are most important to me.Sure, I don’t want my house to be damaged, or my guitars stolen, or my car to break down, but all that is just stuff. Stuff can be fixed or replaced...Or maybe I never really needed it to begin with?

I understand that objects can have sentimental value, but are you willing to die for those things?  I don’t think I am. That just might be the litmus test for future decisions.

Having events occur that force you to have perspective and take stock in what’s important in your life is important in and of itself.Unfortunately, I think a lot of people don’t fully examine this for themselves. Many just won’t dive too deep beyond their surface-level values, or what they think they should value, based on outside influences. I worry that results in people being taken for granted over things.

For the record, I value you, and our relationship here, in this newsletter, even if it never evolves past that. It’s why, over several years, I’ve stayed motivated to write to you regularly. You’re worth it!

Assignment:  Be sure to engage in positive self-talk this weekend. Tell someone you care about, who you don’t normally tell, what they mean to you. When you find you’re about to complain about something, stop and think about why you’re grateful for that situation -- there’s always a bright side or opportunity hidden in there.Have a great weekend!
