Words of Wisdom Learned Along the Way

Today, I wanted to bring you some pieces of advice that I've learned in my career. Some of these are things that have been passed to me from others I've respected and some are simply conclusions I've drawn for myself through experience.Below are just a few of them. I'm fleshing this out into what will likely be a larger blog post available to all. However, feel free to hit reply and share a few of your pearls of wisdom.Always try to provide solutions – whenever a problem arises, try to help identify possible solutions or paths that could lead to solutions. Do not give excuses as to why it can’t work, unless in doing so you have a solution to counter each of those challenges. You will always be viewed as a positive problem-solver if you are constantly trying to help solve issues rather than pass them off on others or make excuses as to why they can’t be solved.Own your decisions – business is fluid, and we all make daily decisions based on the information we have mixed with a gut-check and previous experience. Sometimes we make the right decisions and other times it goes south. Either way, you need to own your decisions and take credit when things work out, and step up to admit when they don’t, but when admitting a wrong decision do your best to be prepared with solutions to correct it.Manage your manager – If you work in an office setting your manager is responsible for your work and the work of several others toward specific objectives. The manager is not, and cannot be as involved in your day-to-day work as you are, so you need to manage your manager on your area of responsibility and expertise. You are the expert in your role because you live it in-depth everyday more so than your manager does – even if your manager used to do your job. To that end, give your manager the clearest picture of what you do, arm your manager with appropriate data and information, do what you can to make your manager look good and if you have a good manager s/he will give you the credit in front of his/her boss to make you look good and help provide you with future opportunities.Don’t argue down stream – if you’re a manager and you are getting frustrating information or conflicts from others in the organization who are not your reports and/or not at a similar managerial level, don’t argue with them. Make decisions, share solutions and/or if your higher-ups have already made decisions about the topic that conflicts with the person’s view who you’re talking with, just thank them knowing a decision above both of you has already been made.Always be a student – you will never know everything there is to know about anything, so don’t get an ego about your area of expertise, or your level or years of experience. Approach everyday with an open mind and ask, “what can I learn today?†With a student-like mindset you’re developing your skills, honing your craft and always getting better.***Reminder...
