Succeed Quickly
You’ve likely heard the phrase, “fail fast.”
It’s often used in business to describe the application of ideas as potential solutions to problems and shedding them quickly if they prove not to work. Then a new iteration of the idea is applied and tried in hopes that it will be a successful solution.
The thought is that the failure of the earlier idea was determined quickly and moved aside for a new idea that might work. The earlier idea failed fast to quickly make way for a new idea that will hopefully succeed.
I just have never liked the term — “fail fast.”
It sounds negative and demotivating to me. Why doesn’t anyone say, “succeed quickly,” or something along those lines?
Words have weight and impact on their intended audience.
If you’re trying to motivate your team at work or even your family at home, your choice of words will naturally bring out a vibe — negative or positive — based on the impact of the words you all share with one another. This creates a natural operating culture among the people involved. As the culture manifests over time you’ll know whether or not it’s toxic or supportive and nurturing.
I don’t always choose words that land with the positive and supportive impact I want. Sometimes I downright fail at this, and I mean in the most negative terms possible.
However, I’m also aware of this and constantly strive to move in the opposite direction more times than not so I can be more positive and supportive most often vs. toxic and negative. Such self-awareness is one way to succeed quickly.
