Adapt and Delay

4/21/24

Bear with me. As I’m writing this I’m working through a thought process.

When we get into the rhythm of day-to-day life things get busy -- there are always deadlines and deliverables; things that need to be prioritized and reprioritized.

Sometimes in that process of reprioritizing for the umpteenth time it’s clear that delaying something on your “list of all the things” is necessary.

It could be necessary for a variety of reasons, but usually it’s because you just aren’t comfortable that you can give that thing the attention it needs or deserves to get it across the finish line…at least not yet.

There may be situations where a delay just isn’t possible -- especially when something unexpected arises and forces you to reprioritize things -- but in the grand scheme of life (and certainly work life) a delay won’t cause the world to end.

I’ve been thinking a lot about deadlines, deliverables, and especially delays lately. In part, because my family is getting into the final phase of moving to a new location (not far from our current location, but a move is a move and it’s a lot to deal with). As a result I’ve been delaying other things to prioritize things related to the move.

I've been delaying things like bringing to market new guitars I’ve built, restructuring the technology platforms I use to run my creative business endeavors, releasing new music with my band, Gemini’s Rival, and even at work, our team has had to delay deliverables due to various changes and hiccups out of our immediate control, so we have to adapt our priorities and delay some things until we can focus on it more and ensure the timing is right for our other priorities…

Just having a small a-ha! moment for myself as I’m writing…that’s really what this message is about: adapting and delaying to properly assess situations so you can reprioritize on a timeline and minimize any negative downstream impacts.  All the while optimizing toward doing fewer things, better.

Perhaps doing fewer things better will improve the amount of delays needed overall.
