No doubt, you've been hearing all about the coronavirus lately, and organizations all around us, likely ones you work for or frequent are cancelling events and gatherings. This is happening for obvious reasons, but perhaps less obvious is to help "flatten the curve" of the spreading illness to a level that our health system can more likely keep up with.Regardless, it's best to do your part to minimize your risk, so use your best judgement about whether or not you should go to that event coming up. Don't shake hands (elbow bump or simply wave to each other), wash hands, and use technology for virtual communications as you're able to.That brings up a good point...New to working remote? Many organizations are encouraging workers to now work remotely at home for the time being.I've been happily working from home for the past four years, but it definitely took some getting used to.While in many cases working remote may be a welcomed idea there are some things to keep in mind if you've never worked full-time from home before. Dealing with isolation. It can become lonely working from home when you don't occupy the same physical space as other humans.Sure you can video chat for meetings and talk live on the phone, but it's still not quite the same. That being said, be sure to schedule some quick breaks where you can quickly reach out to a friend for a brief check-in call to chat about something other than work, or grab lunch together (though be careful with in-person meetings given the current state of health). If you have a pet, schedule a quick cat cuddle break now and then, or take the dog on a walk around the block. These are opportunities to break up your work routine and build in some social/companion time to fend off some of the isolating feelings that can occur when working at home. It's also wise, if possible to have a dedicated space in which you can work, and leave your work when your work day is done. This can help you "leave" work at work even when you're working at home. If you don't have a dedicated space, be sure to pack up your work materials (laptop, notebook, etc.) from your kitchen table at the end of the work day. Also, if you're easily distracted when at home, by TV or doing dishes, be sure to stay focused and try to remove those distractions from your work area. This will help you stay productive. Be well. Be safe. Wash hands. Stay home.
