Momentum

Momentum can be powerful and helpful as you move through work and life towards your goals; towards the way you want to live and show up every day as your full, authentic self.

How do you recognize momentum?

How do you capitalize on it?

Recognizing momentum is probably tougher than capitalizing on it…just saying.  However, the easiest way I understand how to recognize momentum as it’s occurring is to reflect daily on how I’m feeling about the actions I’ve taken recently in my work and life and identify which of those actions have been leading to positive outcomes.

When I say, “positive outcomes,” in this context I’m referring to results of actions taken that accomplish the things I needed to accomplish in a given timeframe (like at work), or wanted to accomplish (with life – family, work, the whole bit), and how those results were positive.

In other words, how did they make me feel?  Did the outcome help my family, myself, my employer? Did it align with the way I like to operate, how I use my skills, knowledge, and interests?

If “yes,” then how can I use that positive feeling – those endorphins and confidence – to push further with more actions that move in a similar direction that likely will produce a similar positive outcome and feeling?

Sometimes this seems easier said than done, but I can say from my own experience that if you take some time to reflect on your to-do lists from last week to:

  1. review what you accomplished,

  2. identify which accomplishments you were most energized by, and then

  3. examine why you felt that way...

...you can begin to recognize the types of actions that excite and motivate you. That's momentum you can capitalize on to compound positive results.
