There is value in experience
It feels good to push through a big project.
This last week I was revamping an entire online customer program for my work. It’s an online community that more than 20,000 people access daily, so it was a relatively big project to do a bunch of behind the scenes work to be able to unveil the new version of the program on Monday.
The project has been nearly a year in the making. We had to take into consideration our desired future outcomes and how to arrive there with a new strategy and how to approach change management to make the process as smooth as possible for all involved.
I won’t bore you with all the details but just know there have been a lot of details to deal with. And even though the big lift of work has now happened, there will be a “babysitting” period in the next few weeks where unique and unexpected scenarios will inevitably arise and need to be addressed to improve every detail for the benefit of our customers’ and our organization’s goals.
So what? What’s the point, you ask?
Doing the hard work to reach a desired outcome is never easy, and that goes for work projects and especially for life events. However, you gain confidence and motivation when you come out on the other side having proved to yourself that you’re capable of doing all the necessary hard work.
That’s gold my friends!
That confidence and motivation grows with each project or situation you’re disciplined enough to push through with your best effort. Then, over time, you get more and more comfortable taking on anything that comes your way - difficult situations or otherwise - because you’ve successfully navigated similar waters before. It’s not completely unknown territory.
This is, in part, why there is value in experience. The more experience you have working through various situations the more data you have in that computer between your ears to access when new situations come up. You can compare the new situation to the saved experience data in your brain to output an easier path forward towards successfully solving the current situation.Don't be nervous. You've got this!
