Difference between timing and risk
I’ve been thinking about timing this week.
More specifically, good and bad timing to start engaging in something.
Sorry, that’s still pretty vague. Let me give an example:
Say you just got laid off, decided (or needed) to move, and plan to begin your own business. To many, myself included, it might be more practical to wait on starting your own business until you’ve moved and have a way (a new job, even if for temporary purposes) to pay off the credit card debt you incurred by having to move at a time when you didn’t have steady income.
That scenario might be an example of bad timing to start a business…or is it?
My opinion is, there is never a good time to start a business, or change jobs, or get married, move, have a child, or deal with any other life event. The best thing you can do is assess your situation, calculate your risk, minimize the risk as much as you’re able, make a decision and plan, execute the plan, and realize your plan will change as soon as you start to execute it. Then adapt and keep taking action towards your goal.
All this is to say, timing will never be ideal. You will wait and wait and never achieve anything if you insist on only taking action when the timing is good. Ultimately, doing so will set you up for failure, or at the least, resentment and regret — not an ideal way to live in my opinion.
Let’s circle back to our fictitious scenario from before. If our protagonist wants to start a business amidst other life events that could make doing so difficult, that’s fine, there really is no good timing. However, if that were me, I would simply plan to get a job as a temporary means (even just a part-time job if need be) to have income coming in to pay rent and expenses while I work on launching and running my own business.
See, there’s a difference between timing and risk. People often get hung up on good/bad timing in life — forget that…life situations are what they are, you can’t change the past but you can influence your future. Focus on calculating and minimizing your risk so you can make anytime “good timing” for your life.Be well!
