Make change a habit

Change is the only true constant in life.I think about this at times like these when we’re in a season of new routines.Specifically, I’m talking about my kids starting a new school year and it being virtual to begin with. This virtual schooling experience is different than the abrupt transition to online learning from last spring. It’s more thought out, improved, which I’m grateful for. This season of the year tends to get busy with work for me, which includes conferences and promotional pushes through the end of the calendar year. Now that in-person conferences are not really happening, the change over to virtual ones is reason enough to rethink the conference experience and improve what can be done virtually.Changing and adapting to new routines is not always easy, whether starting a new school year or entering a busy season of work. The reason change is hard is that we build habits around existing routines that once our brain understands the habit, it can run the routine somewhat on autopilot saving brain power to be used for other tasks that aren’t habits. (You can read all about it in Charles Duhigg’s book, “The Power of Habit”)When those habits change, or are forced to change, our brain wants to create new habits around the new routine and that takes time to get used to.It takes patience, perseverance, and consistency to get a new routine into a more habitual state vs. a different, clunky, cumbersome process.Just know that the process of forming a new routine is temporary. You’ll get where you need to be. Give yourself some grace and patience to get there. Also, release yourself from too many expectations so you can create mental space to breathe, adapt, and thrive in the face of change. You’ve got this!  Have a great rest of your week.
