Balance Competing Forces

Okay, so the school year is underway for the kids and I’m getting the new pick up/drop off routine down. My days are flying by, productive and busy, but overall pretty good. However, I do feel like each day is running right into the next with little breathing room at the moment. 

All right, let's hold that thought for a moment...

The weather, here in Wisconsin, has abruptly changed from summer - hot and humid - to fall - cool and subdued - in less than a week’s time.

Fall makes me want to slow down, reflect, breathe (we’re tying things together now, stay with me) and hunker down for the winter to come. (Don’t worry, I won’t talk about winter just yet. Let’s stay with fall.)

So now, I have two competing things going on:  

  1. Busy days that run one into the next with little room to take a breath and 

  2. The fall season which makes me want to slow down, breathe, and reflect

Can you relate?

So here’s how I look at it: God, the universe, whatever your belief system is, is giving signals that I need to slow down as the fall settles in. It’s not that I’m running at a breakneck pace that might have dire consequences, but it’s a reminder to stop and smell the roses, so to speak. 

There are certainly times to sprint, but if you sprint all the time you’ll be out of breath and miss all the scenery that you just whizzed by. Perhaps, even missing opportunities to connect with a friend who can only wave hello to you as you run past because you’re moving too fast.

And, if you move that fast all the time, there will come a time when you can’t go that fast and you might look back at several things you missed by rushing ahead.

Balance is the key. I know, it’s sometimes easier said than done, but being conscious enough of yourself to recognize when you’re getting out of balance to correct your trajectory is useful self-knowledge -- a true investment in yourself for your future health and success.
