Mental Tension About Emotions

There is a particular tension between an emotion I feel when I hear a song or have certain experiences and the conscious understanding of why I’m feeling that emotion, or what I should do with that emotion.

It’s not that the emotion doesn’t fit with the song or experience triggering that emotion, but it’s this small space between the emotion itself and the conscious thought about whether you should mentally embrace the emotion or not.

Okay, this may seem overly conceptual, and may not make complete sense to you, but that’s in part, the point.

It seems, out in the ether, that there is this slight mental tension between a desire for control over what you feel and why, and simply letting yourself feel what you are feeling without explanation or need for mental control over the emotion triggered.

Is there shame in allowing yourself to feel what we’re feeling when this concept occurs? Is that the reason for the mental tension? As an adult male in our society, I think I, and probably others, have been culturally conditioned that vulnerability and/or showing one’s emotions is a sign of weakness. I don’t personally believe that, but I do find myself having that thought process sometimes.

Now, if you’re feeling emotions that are provoking you to physically hurt yourself or others, then yes, you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. However, if you have a metaphorical kink limiting the emotional flow of water through the garden hose, then, yeah, why? (by the way, I don’t necessarily have an answer; it’s just something I’m exploring, but if you have a thought about it, hit reply and let me know)

I’m attempting to be better at simply allowing myself to feel whatever I feel and embrace it to try and become more self-aware and grow from these feelings into a better version of myself. How about you?
