Push through

A) It’s now September. How did that happen?B) The kids (and my educator wife) are back in school

The last couple of weeks of summer vacation before school started was a bit overwhelming. I think in part due to the transitioning of “summer routine” to the “school year routine.”

However, we made it, so far. As my wife says, “Let’s just take it one day, one week at a time.”  Good advice.

It’s all too easy to get anxious when you know a transition point is approaching in your life, like going back to school, or starting a new job, or establishing new relationships, etc…anything where the fear of the unknown arises.

The way life works doesn’t always make sense, but sometimes life’s nonsensical ways are somewhat predictable.

Here’s what I mean by that:

If you’re anxious about something – fear the unknown – you must not avoid it (unless it hurts you or others, then avoid it). The best thing to do is to embrace the situation that is causing anxiety, and push through it.

What’s predictable in life is that if you move toward and through that situation you will be stronger, experience growth, and gain more confidence as a result. However, if you avoid it, or try to circumvent it, that “thing,” that anxiety, will, predictably, keep showing up in your life in various ways…that is until you move towards it and through it.

Quick story. Yesterday was my youngest’s first day of school. It went well until the bus ride home…

He got on the right bus, but for some reason the bus driver didn’t have him on his list of passengers (even though we double checked with the school prior). The poor kid was the last child on the bus when the bus driver realized that he had one more kid on the bus than was on his list of passengers.

My boy rode all over town for more than an hour after the first day of school. At this point he was very anxious (as 7 year olds can get) that he may never make it home again. Through the tears, without knowing street names, and without a cell phone (he’s 7), he used familiar landmarks to direct the bus driver where to go to deliver him back home. My boy was successful. Yes, he was anxious, scared, worried, but he pushed through and took action.I’m proud of him, and I think he’s a bit proud of himself too. He’s definitely walking a little taller and more confident today.
