Tough Love

I can feel it, can you?  Summer is fast approaching its end. I’m always left torn about this time of the year. I love summer and the warmth (especially here in Wisconsin – not many warm months), but I also like Fall. Fall is always a point in the year where I have a bunch of creative energy.

However, let’s not jump the gun too much. There’s plenty of summer left.

I’m finally beginning to feel like I’m getting into a good day-to-day productive work rhythm since the thick of the pandemic that shut the world down beginning in 2020.

Two years seems like a long time to get back to a reasonable work/life rhythm, but we all went through a lot and a lot has since changed, and we’ve all had to figure out how to adapt and adapt quickly…quicker than many of us have had to adapt before.

As a result, we’re building new habits, new ways of approaching things, and shedding things that just don’t work the same way anymore, or don’t serve us well anymore. Remaining optimistic and taking positive action seem to be the best secret weapon against otherwise cruddy situations.

Enter:  a little tough love that I too need to be reminded of…

For example, I find it interesting how many music creators (potential clients) who inquire with Eleven Music Career Center, (the company I co-founded with Matt and Steve – shout out) just have an extremely hard time accepting that our industry just doesn’t operate like it did even 5 years ago.

What ends up frustrating me about this is when many of them (usually the ones stuck in a fixed mindset that we don’t end up working with) reach out to us to solve all their problems when they aren’t willing to listen to what we suggest or take any real action to even attempt to improve their situation. They simply seem to want to complain about it and pass blame on anyone or anything other than themselves.

Here’s the long and the short of it…there are always external factors at play in any situation (good or bad), but what you focus on between your ears and how you proceed with a positive mindset and actual action is how one can improve a bad situation. By my estimate, of the 20% of people who tend to complain the loudest about…whatever, 80% of their issues are because of a negative attitude and fixed mindset.

You always have a choice about how you deal with whatever hand you’ve been dealt in life. Not every situation is easy to deal with, but you can choose to remain open and optimistic about how to move forward, and take action in that direction, or not.  If not, I can almost guarantee things will continue to go “wrong” in your life.
