Controlling gratitude
For those of you with school aged children another unusual school year is about to get under way.Even for those schools that will allow kids to be there in-person, it will be a different experience than what we’ve previously known. The unknown of building a new routine. The uncertainty of what a new academic year will bring. Simply not having the perception of control we once thought we had.Well, I’m here to tell you, that “control,” was a myth all along. There are certainly things you can control for yourself, but they usually relate to you personally and your mindset – what you decide to wear when you get dressed in the morning, or how upset you allow yourself to get when you turn on the news. But external circumstances don’t allow for nearly as much control. You can influence many things like your ability to provide value to your employer to help maintain employment, but even that is not something you can fully control. It’s no wonder that so many of us have high anxiety in general let alone in the midst of our current health, racial, and political environment. But as my wife says, “gratitude is a form of humility.” I definitely agree, and in my opinion, maintaining a humble and vulnerable character is the quickest path to empathy, trust, healing, and love. We can control our gratitude. When we do, we control our ability to have hope. When we have hope there is room for growth and love even in times of frustration when there is no shortage of things to complain about. What are you grateful for?
