It's helpful to have others "proof-read" your work
Hi , why is it that deciding what we want for ourselves and our profession is so difficult? Although, when others ask for advice about their lives it seems slightly easier to offer suggestions.
I suppose in some respects it's like being too close to your own writing to have the kind of perspective needed to see your own typos and grammatical errors. Hence, if we're writing something we might have someone else proof-read and edit it for us.
While the pursuit of your professional and life goals are yours, more often than not it makes sense to have others who you trust "proof-read" your work. Not so much to validate your choices but rather to provide a different perspective to help you refine your approach so you remain focused on how the pursuit of your goals will help you achieve or accomplish what you want.
In the past I have personally felt very isolated in my pursuits. Primarily, because I haven't found too many others who I trust who are in as similar life stage or situation as myself. It’s a matter of not feeling like I’ve had many people around me who could relate and understand enough of my situation and thought process to help me build a bridge to another perspective that could benefit my forward motion.
More recently I’ve been finding myself seeking those people out, and I’m glad I have.
I've also often been able to be that outside perspective for others and more recently I've realized how being the trusted outside perspective for others is actually helping me gain the kind of outside perspective I need.
Simply by engaging others to be a trusted outside perspective the dialog back and forth has the other person, who I might be helping out, actually helping me. By understanding their situation and how aspects of it are similar or different from my own there is insight and knowledge reciprocated in the conversation that is invaluable to both parties.
As a creative person, often just “talking shop†with another creative person can unlock new ideas.
My advice is to build your network of trusted outside perspectives, even if it’s just one other person. If nothing else, be the trusted outside perspective for others. I guarantee you’ll get something good out of it if you show up with the intention to be positive and helpful.
Hit reply and let me know how you’re going to share your journey with at least one other person this week.
