Anxiety
You’re starting to feel fidgety. You’re motoring your leg up and down under the table while you sit. You seem to have lots of nervous energy, and you feel slightly on edge like some small change in plans could potentially ruin your day.
You’re feeling anxious.
There might be a multitude of reasons your anxiety has culminated to its current state, but regardless of what has caused this feeling, how can you start to calm yourself to gain better control over your anxiety?
If you can, pause yourself in your current situation. Take 5 minutes to reduce external stimulation. Close your eyes, and take several deep breaths while you try to clear your head by not thinking of anything specific, or focus on a memory or moment that made you really happy, relaxed, and/or fully energized.
Just taking 5 minutes to do this can reduce your anxiety.
Here are a few other tactics that can help:
Examining all the things on your mind that you believe might be causing your anxiety and writing them out on a piece of paper. The act of identifying them, naming them, and accepting them as you write them out helps to release the anxiety’s hold on you and you quickly start to feel better.
You can further this idea by writing out 5 to 10 things that you are truly grateful for in your life. Gratitude helps to counter anxiety.
Engaging in an activity that forces you to use another part of your brain can help too. Like drawing or coloring in a coloring book, embroidery, knitting, playing a musical instrument, or even just turning on your favorite song and singing to it.
Physical exercise is another stress reliever. Not even running, but just walking can get your blood flowing and help shoot off endorphins as a result of the physical activity, and those endorphins will help ease your anxiety.
Being anxious is no fun. The good news is that there are things you can do to help yourself.
