Happy 4th of July
Bye-bye June, hello July. I can’t believe we’re already past the mid-point of the year.
I certainly hope you are able to find some time to relax, enjoy good weather with good friends and family over the July 4th weekend. (Same to you my Canadian friends -- wishing you a happy belated Canada Day, and for anyone else in other countries, I hope your weekend is amazing).
I think now more than ever people are beginning to appreciate their true friends and dedicated family members as we slowly emerge from the pandemic lockdown. For example, I got to spend some quality time with my wife in the past week for our anniversary, and I also got to see a great, long-time friend who was in town from out of state.
I think we appreciated these interactions more because of the contextual comparison of being able to socially interact while being out and about with one another vs. isolated and quarantined due to COVID. I felt a real gratitude in those moments with these people I care about in my life.
On a larger scale, now that we’re getting closer to the other side of this pandemic, I think from a creative standpoint, we’re going to see a boon of interesting expressions in the arts and pop culture due to woodshedding during the lockdown, and pent up creative energy being channeled through artistic expression.
In some ways, this boon of creative expression will be a celebration of survival, in other ways it will be a constructive way to express the grieving process of what many went through during these past couple of years.
I also think, human creativity is pushing further to the forefront as a necessary complement to, and counter move to rapidly evolving technology. In some ways COVID put a spotlight on this, and human thought and creativity -- which are harder for artificial intelligence (AI) tech to replicate -- is coming through as a new normal for working people to remain competitive in a global marketplace.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, as it’s just my opinion and observations. However, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling a shift in society from before the pandemic to now.
Anyway, enjoy your freedom of thought, expression, and those who continue to defend that privilege this weekend. Happy 4th of July!
