Learn to Be Child-Like in Your Adulthood

I hope your Monday went well. You may be drinking coffee right now because you’re still working on your Monday, or you may be on to more adult drinks at this point in the day.Either way, here’s your weekly newsletter to help you push through the rest of the week.First off, I wanted to thank everyone who came out to my music performance. This past weekend I got to hang out with some old friends at Water House Bistro in Lake Mills, WI, where I performed some of my original singer/songwriter-y music in conjunction with the Lake Mills Arts Festival.I have to say, that was the first full-length music show I’ve done in over a year, and it felt really good. Now that my youngest is 2 years old it’s becoming slightly easier to book some shows and get playing more regularly again. If you have a passion for something, whether it’s music or something else, you likely understand that feeling of truly needing to act on that passion as a contributor to your overall health and well-being.Sadly, when life happens, many allow their passion to gradually slide away as a subordinate low-level priority.  I know, this happened -- temporarily -- to me a few times in my life. Although, for me, it wasn’t always gradual, and I didn’t let it slide into the background very willingly.Nonetheless, it happened, and when it does you end up feeling iritated and angry, or even sad for what seems like unknown reasons, but you justify it with, “I have to take care X, Y, and Z as those are the main priorities at the moment.â€That’s true to an extent. We all have priorities and responsibilities in life that we need to ensure are taken care of, but I implore you not to give up on your passions. Find a way to scratch, claw and fight to keep them alive in whatever small way you can muster enough energy for right now.I say this, because there are peaks and valleys in life. Many valleys in life are temporary, and you’ll constantly be building your momentum in the peaks if you fight for your passions in the valleys.Pursuing your interests is one way to have good self-care. Sure you have day to day tasks and activities that you’re not passionate about that need to get done, but find even tiny opportunities to engage in your passion among your other seemingly mundane daily tasks. Five minutes consumed in something you enjoy is better than zero minutes. The point is, as we get older and our lives get more complex we have to discover new ways to pursue our passions. The old way of such pursuits, prior to adult life, likely allowed larger swaths of time to spend on whatever we wanted and with little to no adult-like responsibilities to worry about. Now, it’s not that you have to give up pursuing your passions, you simply need to find a more fitting approach to navigate all that your adult life entails. My thought is that I would rather be child-like in an adult life than be a child struggling to live as an adult.***In other news...I’m excited to be performing my music at the Fisher King Winery in Verona, WI on Friday August 4, 2017 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. This is a great venue to connect with friends over a glass of wine while listening to some live music. Mark your calendars.Have a great week!
