Life is a funny pendulum. In different phases, life’s pendulum seems to swing wide in one particular direction, and in other phases it swings the opposite way. Over time, however, it always swings back. I guess the point is, if your current phase in life is not where you want to be, that's okay, it will change. However, there is something familiar when it swings in a similar direction you've experienced before. While it might not be exactly the same, you've survived the pendulum swing already in your life so you're better equipped to handle what may come than the previous version of yourself would be. What are you doing differently this time around? What will you do the same? The choice is yours, but I would encourage taking a few moments to step back and examine what’s happening, where you are now and how this is similar or different than other times in your life when faced with decisions that need to be made thoughtfully. In the book spiritual psychology book, Loyalty to Your Soul, authors Ronald and Mary Hulnick present the idea of Stackers.I’m paraphrasing here, but the idea of Stackers is a series of experiences in your life that seem to stack up and repeat themselves in various forms until you make the correct choices and learn the lessons such experiences are intending to teach you.I’m drawing a parallel to the pendulum. However, when life scenarios present themselves in new yet familiar ways I’ve found it’s an opportunity to grow. But how? That’s where careful examination is important. It’s crucial to pause for a moment and examine how your current situation is like and/or unlike other similar situations you’ve found yourself in before. Write it down. What did you choose in those other situations? How did that pan out? What would you do differently in those same situations now, if you could? Does that apply to your current situation? If so, how? What are your options? If not, why?Jot these things down. The exercise will help you solidify the best course of action. Sure you may still have a hard decision in front of you, but you’ll feel like you examined it more thoroughly and will be more confident in whatever decision you end up making.
