Manage your burn rate
New subscriber shout out: Welcome Jacqui. Thanks for being here!------------------------------What’s your burn rate today?
I’m talking about your mental capacity for not burning out with work.
I've been feeling completely burnt out with work stuff lately.
There are multiple elements that make up a work balance that many, including myself, are after these days. That balance consists of:
The amount of money the job pays
The amount of actual time required to reach the objectives of the role (not just what the job description says) to get that pay
Interest in the role and its work to help stay motivated to do the work
The amount of time one is willing to sacrifice for the satisfaction of doing the job well and earning its payout
The most important factor in all of this, to me, is Time. I want to do a job I’m interested in, that I have skills to do, and can earn satisfaction from doing well to warrant an amount of pay consistent with the market value for that work AND the workload can reasonably be accomplished in 40 hours a week (or even slightly less) – more than 40 hours a week is an unreasonable expectation (especially if it’s not explicitly expressed up front) by an employer…unless you own the business, which likely will require more hours.
I say only 40 hours a week (probably really should be about 30 to 35 to offer the best work/life balance) because anything more than that starts to infringe on your mental capacity to be present at home for your family during non-work hours.
More than 40 hours also infringes on other interests you have outside of work because you no longer have a chance to get to them, so those fun activities are no longer refreshing and re-energizing your mindset to carry you through to providing great effort in your working hours. This becomes a slippery slope into depression – lack of confidence, lack of energy, lack of interest in most things, lack of health, lack of feeling like you have a meaningful life.
No one will manage your “burn rate” for you, which is why it’s imperative for you to become clear on what you value and what you need to live your best work AND home life, and then protect it relentlessly.
