Reduce Your Work Week Anxiety

6/2/24

First off, happy birthday to my dad today!  Also, happy birthday to my youngest son tomorrow!

It’s been a long week, even though it was a short week with last Monday’s Memorial Day holiday.

That may be why it was a long week – trying to compress more into four days vs. spreading it out over five.

However, it was a productive week. I think the compressed week caused more focus toward getting things done.

Hit reply and let me know your take. I’m always interested.

The other thing that I’ve noticed has helped my productivity lately is having an organized way to help prioritize what needs to get done for the week, or month, or quarter.

For me, this has required taking some time to have forethought about all that needs to get done in a week or month. As I write that sentence, I’m overwhelmed. That’s not my intention. In fact, we want to reduce that overwhelming feeling. Here’s how…

I find just brain dumping a list of all the things I can think of that need to get done in the next week (starting on Monday).  The beauty of this brain dump list is that you’re just trying to get out the things you can think of that need doing that week. The order doesn’t matter, how you’ll approach getting them done doesn’t matter yet…just list things out.

Next, once you feel you have an exhaustive list. Review the top 3 to 5 things on that list that need to get done by mid-week (Wednesday, we’ll say). Next, do the same for the second half of the week. Now, look at what’s left on your list. Can any of that be pushed out to next week? Is it really even a priority to get done, or just something you know needs to be done?

The idea is that you’re just trying to get a high-level priority list of what needs to be accomplished by the end of next week.

I can almost guarantee that by doing this early in the week your subconscious will begin working out how to accomplish those items, which will allow you to more quickly and effectively take the necessary action to complete those tasks and cross them off of your list throughout the week.

And the biggest benefit is the reduced anxiety you’ll feel about what needs to get done that week because you won’t be spending energy trying to figure it out during the week while you’re also trying to get those things done.

The exercise reduces what you have to think about during the week so your focus can narrow on what you’ve already identified as needing to get done.

FYI - Songwriters Round Town will be taking the summer off. These sonic storytelling group sessions typically take place on the third Saturday of every month. May 18 was the last one that occurred, and we won't resume again until September 2024. The good news is that it gives us time to write new material for September!
