Balancing your life's currency investments

Metaphor time:

There are several “currencies” in life that we all must engage in and choose how we exchange – similar to how we exchange money for goods and services.

Time has value as a currency. (Think of how you exchange your time for income at a job.)

Relationships have value as a currency.  (Think of the give-and-take value exchanged in any relationship with family and/or in your career via key contacts and networking.)

Attention has value as a currency. (Think of all the messages, images, and videos trying to grab your eyeballs as you scroll through your social media feed. When you stop on something to check it out, you’ve just exchanged your currency of Attention – your focus – AND your currency of Time has been exchanged for the entertainment you’ve stopped on and chosen to watch – double whammy.)

How you choose to invest in your life’s currencies – over days, weeks, months, and years – has a compounding effect, like compounding interest. And like any long-term investment portfolio, you want it well balanced to maximize your return on those investments. It’s up to you to choose what kind of return you want from your investments – some will yield short-term returns and others longer-term returns.

…and that’s the hard part…

Determining the kind of return you want from your investment, and understanding how to wisely use the currencies you have to create the right balanced portfolio for you.

There are two currencies in my life that I try to relentlessly invest in:  Time and Relationships.

I’m not always wise with these investments, but I keep working at it, and as I get these investments better aligned with my values and life goals, it’s a lot easier to see their compounding effects over the days, weeks, months, and years.

I am grateful for those compounding effects because now they’re an indicator of when my Time and Relationship investments are getting off track — signaling that it’s time for course-correcting action.

How are you balancing your currency investments?  Hit reply and let me know.
