You Against You
Self-imposed pressure is the hardest pressure.
When you experience external pressure you know your “enemy” so to speak vs. self-imposed pressure where it’s you against you. (Pro tip: most challenges in life are you against you).
We do it to ourselves all the time. We put unnecessary extra pressure on ourselves in various settings – at home sometimes, but especially in our work – to perform.
We allow our inner critic a louder-than-required voice in our heads.
This self-imposed pressure is what leads us to feel like an imposter. If you remember, we talked about imposter syndrome recently.
When you start a new job, or you shed things you’ve worked hard on that are no longer serving your best interests. You have a natural fear of the unknown. Fear of not knowing what’s to come or how you will handle it.
You have doubt, and that doubt – even if miniscule – can quickly grow out of control into self-imposed pressure that drives your anxiety through the roof.
The whole reason you even have this doubt to begin with is because you care. You give a crap about what you do, what you’re involved in and succeeding at it. This is often because it’s your livelihood – how you make a living, or even just how you maintain the values you’ve set for yourself and your family.
You can’t get rid of that fear completely. You have to push your way through it (don’t try to avoid it or go around – you can’t conquer it unless you go through it), but when you do you begin to build more self-confidence to continue to squash that doubt until it’s barely audible in your consciousness.
In many ways, this is really what it means to “do the work” as it relates to anything you care about. Push through, gain the experience, and be more confident as a result.
