What you want
I’m currently listening (in Amazon’s Audible app) to Jordan B. Peterson’s book,
So far, it’s been a great eye-opening read/listen.
Each rule appears almost as if it is common sense on the surface, but Peterson unpacks why it is not and why it is harder than one might expect to live by any of his 12 identified rules.
However, the author doesn’t leave you there, Peterson provides potential solutions about how one might live according to each rule and thus, be better equipped to navigate life in a meaningful way for self and others.
It’s kind of a heady, existential book, but with careful consideration for logical flow and connection of ideas throughout the book.
One major theme is that life is chaotic. Chaos can be bad, even crippling, but depending on how chaos is navigated, good things, opportunities and even betterment over one’s previous state prior to the chaos, can emerge.
This book gives thoughts on how one can navigate the minor chaos of daily living as well as the major chaos often uncovered in a stark moment of truth as a result of minor chaos accumulating over time.
Overall, thinking about this and my own life and career, I wonder about how to better prepare myself for navigating the chaos that inevitably will arise – it always does in one form or another.
While it’s easy to believe you’ve dealt with your own chaos if things are going seemingly well, it’s clear that most of us haven’t, nor can we ever fully eradicate chaos – you don’t have peaks without valleys.
So how can we constantly be in position to positively unpack our daily chaos to work through them and emerge grown, better, improved even, on the other side of that chaos?
One thing Peterson points out to that end that can be incredibly difficult to identify is, knowing what we want in life, in any given situation, in our relationships and careers.
However, understanding who you are – strengths and flaws alike – and identifying what you want is half the battle to emerging from any chaos pointed in any sort of positive direction that can raise you back up or improve your overall being.
So maybe it’s time to actually sit down and identify what you want.
