Does your art connect?
The Arts are about taking your creative expression to an audience so that audience can connect with your expression in their own way.
Beyond the artist's intent, and their passion for their creative output, art (in any form) transcends when a connection is made between the art/artist and the consumer/viewer/listener/reader of the art.
It's about an idea, a topic and/or an issue resonating with another person who's meeting that art -- what it represents -- and/or the artist on a similar wavelength at a particular point in time.
Perhaps, a great recent widespread example is the historical hip-hop musical, Hamilton. Listening to the soundtrack, It does a great job of telling a true historical story arc in and interesting, creative and emotionally charged way that the listener can't help but connect with the historical characters' human struggles.
In conversations with other creative folks, I tell them not to overthink the way they will connect with their audience, but to concentrate on creating their art in a way that would make them want to connect with it, if they hadn't created it and they were part of the audience the art was trying to reach.
In other words create what you would resonate with. More than likely there are others who would resonate the same way, and the more you share your art with others the more a core audience for your art will begin to emerge.
It may happen slowly over time, but keep creating and be patient.
My point is, if you let your art precede commerce, and/or the thought of any financial gain from your art, you will likely win a more dedicated audience in the long run because you will have concentrated on creating something passionate and meaningful that will connect.
Have a great week!
