Moving beyond duality

I’m just hanging out on the coach with my laptop as my 4 year old son watches some cartoons.  How is your morning going?

What does "authenticity" mean to you,?

That was the question my friend, fellow musician and Standing Forward owner, Keith Hampton, asked me for a recent project of his.

That question gave me pause because I hadn't really reflected on my own authenticity in a while.

Under one umbrella

The question's timing is relevant.  After many years of internal struggle, I've been giving myself permission to fuse my various interests (in marketing, music, the arts and business) across my web presences, which is why I'm now blogging regularly on NickVenturella.com as a bit of an umbrella brand.  I'm not abandoning any of my other online endeavors (growloop.com, nickvmusic.net, localmusicjourney.com), I'm just being less stogy with myself in my pre-conceived notion that I need to keep them separate.

Do you ever feel like you have to keep various parts of your personal or professional life separate and compartmentalized?  Hit reply and tell me about it.

Opportunity thinking

I've been feeling a similar need for one-ness even with my mainstay marketing gig at Insperity (NYSE:NSP), so I’m even bringing that experience into the fold of my new collected direction on NickVenturella.com.

I’m viewing this consolidation of sorts as a truly unique opportunity that I can share with you because I do a lot of marketing for both a large publicly traded company and small or even solo-run businesses.  I’m constantly trying to figure out how to scale up or down the various marketing discoveries I make because I’m involved in both of these realms. An authentic answer

So here's how I answered the question that was originally posed:

To me [authenticity] means feeling and being myself in all situations.  What I mean by that is, making sure that I tap into who I am and what my values are when faced with any situation.  I have come to the point where I'm really beginning to blur the lines between my work life and my life beyond work, specifically, in the way that I interact and respond to people...I'm just being me whereas in the past I might have tried to be more "professional" in a work setting than in my personal life.  Now, there's just one "setting," and I'm more positive and happy that I'm living in less duality.

Have you ever felt a sense of inauthentic duality in your life or work?  How did you overcome it?  Or, are you still working through it?  How is it going?  Hit reply and let me know.

Take care,
