I was recently watching Bruce Springsteen on Broadway on Netflix. It’s the Boss’s one-man show.Now, I’m not a huge die-hard Springsteen fan, but he’s a great storyteller and songwriter.Like a great short story author, Springsteen captures the “slice of life” format extremely well. In the film, he strings those moments together to unfold the story of his life and career and the encounters he had along the way that led to each of the songs he wrote/performs.At one point in the performance, Springsteen tells a story about his own father coming to see him to apologize for his shortcomings as a dad, and to offer advice as Springsteen, at the time, was just about to become a father himself.Ghosts or AncestorsSpringsteen goes on to say:“We are ghosts or we are ancestors in our children's lives. We either lay our mistakes, our burdens upon them, and we haunt them, or we assist them in laying those old burdens down and we free them from the chain of our own flawed behavior. And as ancestors, we walk alongside of them, and we assist them in finding their own way and some transcendence."Springsteen realized that, after years as a ghost, in that moment his dad "petitioned for a role" as an ancestor. Springsteen went on say, "It was the greatest moment in my life with my Dad, and it was all that I needed."Who will you strive to be?All this is to say, you have a choice each day to either be a ghost or an ancestor to others…and not only to your kids, but your spouse, partner, siblings (maybe even your own parents), friends, coworkers, even strangers.I intend to be an ancestor, how about you?Quick shout out to all the mothers out there.
