Focused Growth

A few years back I became certified as a professional coach. I did this for a variety of reasons, but one of which was that I recognized the skills involved in coaching individuals and professional work teams would benefit my career no matter what work I was doing. Coaching skills are essentially leadership skills.One of the simple, well-articulated lessons that stuck with me was:What you focus on expands. In other words, where ever you put your mental energy is where things will grow. This is an amoral concept. It’s neither good nor bad, but the positive or negative mental energy you apply to whatever it is you have stuck in your brain is what will grow – be it good, or bad…you decide.And that’s the big idea. You get to decide. You have the power to choose what you focus on, and when you do, and you take consistent action towards whatever you’re focused on, you’ll see it grow (hopefully, you’re focusing on something positive – no one needs more negativity to grow).Don’t believe me, try it for yourself...Think of something positive you’d like to grow in your life. It could be to be consistently in a better mood, it could be to accomplish some sort of result within a time frame like, weight loss. It could be to land an interview at a particular company you would like to work at. If you’re a musician, it could be to book a gig at a venue you’d like to perform in.You get the idea. Just pick something, and write it down. Then for one week, look at that written goal, and visualize achieving it, daily. Each day, write down one simple action you can take that would move you closer to that goal. The next day, check off the completed action from the previous day (only if you did it – be sure to do it), and come up with one more action you can take today. This sort of written exercise shouldn’t take long – 5 minutes maybe. Repeat this process diligently for a week, and I promise that you will start to see positive, almost serendipitous, connecting of the dots in your life toward your goal. They might be small, and you likely won’t achieve your goal in a week’s time, but you will better understand the power of positive growth as a result of specific focus.
