Leaving what you loathe behind

Here’s what I’m consciously working on lately…

  • Being present for my family and their needs

  • Striving to be successful in my role at work

  • Making time for my creative craft/passion

  • Pursuing other various opportunities that interest me and fit my skills – taking on freelance projects, etc.

Considering the list above, my plate is pretty full. Some of these things are moving forward in the direction I want them to and others may not quite be where I need them to be.So how do you assess where you need to take action to make your life/situation more positive – more energizing vs. draining? The best advice I have is to do an informal audit of what’s on your plate. Write down the things you’re responsible for in a given week or month…the things you want to be more involved in, what’s frustrating you and what’s working well. Then identify which of those things on your plate you constantly complain about. Which items are so draining that you dread them daily – you loathe them.To help you have some hope and counter the drain, also identify those things that are energizing on a daily basis that you enjoy, so you understand the difference. Now, go back to your ‘loathe’ list…Sometimes there are things on your ‘loathe’ list that you can’t easily just shed and get rid of immediately, so you feel stuck with those. However, I’m here to tell you that no matter how dire you think things are there’s always a path to something better. That said, take at least one of your 'loathe’ items and really examine what makes you loathe it. By doing so, you’re trying to get to the root of why it’s so draining for you. If you can pinpoint that, you can begin to make an incremental plan to change your situation.Changing your situation from something that drains you to something that energizes you is no easy feat. It never happens overnight, nor does it come without effort – you have to identify some real action steps you can take incrementally and climb out of the hole you feel you’re in.The good news is that you’re capable of it, and once you start feeling/seeing progress of your transformation you’ll gain confidence and motivation to push forward.Get acquainted with yourself. Figure out where you want to make changes and begin building a series of small actions that can lead you to a more desired state over time. If you do the work I can guarantee you will end up in a better place than you started.

Speaking of making changes in a direction you want. It’s been some time since I’ve been able to book music performances with any regularity. I’ve been working on rectifying that…Here are the upcoming shows I have in May:
