Awaken your muse

I’ve been listening to Sophie Allison’s (Soccer Mommy) Color Theory album today.I have to say, it’s the first album of new music I’ve listened to in a long, long time that made me feel something deeper than just the enjoyment of hearing reasonably good songs. The melodies are great, the songs are atmospheric, the lyrics are introspective, reflective and dark at times, but authentic and real, and as you listen, you feel she’s conveying something from the core of her being.I heard an interview with Allison on NPR, and she mentioned that her mom has been battling cancer and the effect this has had on Allison certainly comes through in several songs.Beyond that, I recently watched a documentary on Tom Delonge, yes that Tom Delonge – the lead singer and guitarist of the band Blink 182. I wasn’t seeking this documentary out, but I stumbled upon it and after watching it had a bit more respect for Delonge as an artist. The main reason for this newfound respect, was simply in the way he described his endless curiosity for, and pursuit of, the craft of expressing emotion artistically via music, writing, or visuals - those are just tools to convey the story. Plus, I love that he’s bringing art in various forms, and in really interesting science-fiction sorts of ways, to a commercial marketplace with his organization, To The Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences. Why am I sharing this?Well, lately I’ve been trying to immerse myself in my own craft of music from multiple angles – as a songwriter, performer, and business person, among other things. In learning about these artists and their different approaches and experiences from the result of organized chaos into a sonic landscape on the Soccer Mommy album to taking art forms in new directions and combining them in unconventional ways as explained by Tom Delonge, I’ve been feeling like these things are resonating to awaken my internal artistic muse after what seems like an eternal hiatus. And the best part is that these inspirations have found me kind of by accident. I have been seeking inspiration for sure, but I certainly wasn’t seeking these two examples of inspiration consciously by any means. I guess that’s how it works though, if you open yourself up to being inspired, when new things enter your atmosphere you’re more receptive to them.To be more receptive you have to allow yourself to be vulnerable. I think more than anything, that’s what’s been happening to me lately…I’ve been getting back to feeling like myself after having had to put my guard up for such a long time...I'm beginning to shed the anxiety of a lifetime to uncover who I am in my heart of hearts - a creative, sensitive, and vulnerable loving soul. How have you been transforming lately?  Hit reply and let me know.
