Setbacks

Setbacks are not fun. They’re draining.

I know, I know, they’re also opportunities for something different and/or better, but in the moment that setbacks occur, they suck.

That’s how I feel today - in the moment of a setback. At least at work. I won’t get into details, but I’ll share the gist:

My team at work has been building out a plan that we’re working towards executing from now through the end of this year. Our team had a meeting today with higher level internal folks and now we have to hold a bit instead of stepping on the gas as we expected to do following this meeting. Ugh.

There are multiple factors involved about why this setback is occurring, but the unfortunate reality is that we expected that our team and our internal audience were aligned with one another prior to our meeting. However, in the meeting it became apparent that each of our expectations were different than we thought. Obviously there was a communication breakdown somewhere along the way, but where exactly?

Has this sort of thing happened to you recently?  Hit reply and share your best advice to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward.

Now that I’ve expressed my frustration, it’s time to re-assess, re-evaluate, and move forward with more communication to ensure constant alignment along the way. No assumptions.

When I think about it, we as individuals in our daily lives, constantly need to re-align with those around us, and if we allow ourselves to be oriented towards a growth mindset such a re-alignment doesn’t have to feel like a big setback.

While I’m not happy about the setback, I’m already thinking through how to simplify and ultimately make our ongoing communications more consistent and clear to ultimately drive an even better result than what we originally had planned.

Moral of the story:  Don’t let setbacks set you back.
