Self-Reflection Today, Improvement Tomorrow
3/31/24
Happy Easter, to those of you who celebrate!
The month of March has both flown by and been really long.
Here’s what I mean: Looking back at what I’ve been involved in, doing, and accomplishing this past month has been a lot. Even before the month started, I knew there was going to be a lot going on – My family has been preparing for our big move to a new place, my oldest son was preparing for his debut DJ appearance at his big school talent show (which was awesome - so proud). I flew out east to meet up with my Gemini’s Rival bandmate, Dan, to do a three-day studio recording session, all while my wife and I were also getting it done at our day jobs. Oh yeah, and the whole family was out for about a week in the middle of the month because we all got the flu at the same time.
That’s life, right? Hit reply and let me know what your month looked like – it’s not a competition; I’m just happy to help you feel less alone by commiserating.
For the month of March I was focused and just moving through all the things that were happening and needed to happen. Because of that focus it felt fast and furious. Then when you threw in unexpected things like the family getting sick and we needed to slow down and rest to get healthy, that made the rest of the month’s tasks feel compressed – like we had less time than we thought to get those things done, which caused anxiety…well, additional anxiety that no one needed.
Now that I look back at the end of the month, I can see how much my family and I did and what we accomplished toward our objectives for the month. That’s what makes it feel, in retrospect, like the month took so long.
It’s like in movies when there’s a scene where someone is moving so fast that everything around them seems like it’s moving in slow motion. That’s what I’m feeling in hindsight.
And now, right now, I’m able to pause for a moment to process this idea, and doing so is important. It’s important to examine how far you’ve come over a period of time. It’s important to recognize for yourself the actions you’ve taken and the victories you’ve accomplished as a result of those actions. For what it’s worth, if interested, I created a non-tech tool to help you document such things to track how it improves your mood and mindset as you pursue your goals.
All plugs aside, I want you to take a pause today to think about where you’ve been, what you’ve done over the past little bit of time, and how that affects you as you move forward. That self-reflection today can help improve your tomorrow.
