Motivate Yourself

First off, quick shout out to a couple of new subscribers:  Thank you, Sam and Ray! Glad to have you here!

------

In marketing it's important to understand what motivates your target audience. This is because when you appeal to what someone cares about it can be a lever toward them taking action on something…usually, what you the marketer want them to do.

Basic Example: Since you love your dog, be sure you buy THIS dog food to keep it healthy and happy.

What’s interesting to me is that many people get this idea but they don’t apply it to themselves.

What I mean is, many don’t examine themselves to determine what motivates them at home, at work, in life.

This often leads to wandering aimlessly about your direction in life, and can lead to disengagement, disappointment, and even depression.

That’s not good for you or anyone else you impact in life.

So how do you find out what motivates you to lead to -- at the least -- an incremental life direction that you can build upon over time?

Simple. Answer the following questions for yourself:

  • What do you like?

  • Who / what do you care about?

  • What gives you energy when you talk about it, do it, or experience it?  (In contrast, know what drains you to avoid that as much as you can.)

  • What sort of morals or ethics do you value?

Write down your answers to the above questions and look at them regularly. Reflect on them. Be real with yourself about how much of those things you have consistently showing up in your day-to-day life.

If you realize there is a lack of these things present in your life, think of a few ways you could increase them, beginning today. It doesn’t have to be a big effort. For example, if you like reading and don’t do enough of it, find a way to carve out a half hour, or even 15 minutes of dedicated reading time just because it's important to do things you like.Doing so will feed your positive energy and you will feel -- if you consistently make small changes like that -- better equipped to tackle those parts of your day that may be necessary but not as fun.

Don't be turned off by this next part though it may sound corny. After each moment that you do something you like, or when you get to enjoy time with people you love — either out loud or just quietly to yourself — say, “Thank you. I’m grateful for having this time to engage in something I care about.”

Pay attention to how you feel after doing so.Then, consciously make an effort to consistently review your list of...

  • people/things you care about,

  • things you like to engage in daily, and

  • your expression of gratitude for it...

...and I guarantee that you will be in a better mood than you are today. You will notice it, and others will too. Life will feel slightly better and / or easier to manage. When you have the self-awareness to know what motivates you, you have the energy and power to more easily and positively persevere in life.Be well!
