assess, accept, adjust, and optimize
I’m tired today. My youngest child decided he wasn’t going to sleep last night and ended up staying up past 2:00am, keeping me up in the process.
Keep the coffee coming.
Him not sleeping was unexpected, and it is affecting me, my energy level, my focus, my patience, but the sun still rises and you have to forge ahead. The world keeps turning. Things still need to get done. My responsibilities don’t take a break.
For the record, I’m not at all advocating that you stay up around the clock and not sleep to get things done. You need good sleep and you need to find a way to carve out a routine that will help you consistently get good sleep. That's just healthy.
However, what I’m getting at is surprises come up. Life happens when we least expect it -- good or bad. You can constantly be prepared for anything if you can find some gratitude in the unexpected things that arise.
What I mean is, I’m grateful that even though my son would not sleep last night, I got to spend several hours one-on-one with him. He’s 5 years old now. He won’t be 5 for long, and I won’t get to spend times like that with him as much as he gets older. Maybe it’s the coffee talking, but when I reflect on it from that perspective I’m less upset about not sleeping -- still tired mind you, but not upset.
The other way to approach the unexpected is to release as many expectations of how you think things should be. When you have too many preconceived notions about how things should go, how people should act, what should happen and when, it’s easy to be thrown off and disappointed when things don’t go as planned.
Pro tip: things rarely go as planned.
But, how you adjust and adapt to life as it comes your way is a choice, and it can be a positive choice that you make, regularly. The more you make the positive choice to assess, accept, adjust, and optimize your path forward the more you will likely experience consistently small victories that add up to big victories.
