Re-examine the Tortoise

2/25/24

My family and I are moving. Not far, just into a neighboring school district so my oldest can start a better, right-fit high school for his freshman year next fall.

While the move is pretty lateral across the board – geographically, financially, type of house, etc. – the disruption of coordinating all the details that go into buying and selling houses, and actually moving your life to a different place is a lot of work. However, we’ll get there, little by little.

Positive progress in life is a game of inches.

Forward progress is the key.

Small incremental gains, consistently over time, will get you there, so it’s important not to get frustrated with small gains. We all want to move forward in miles vs. inches, but I’ll take inches everyday of the week knowing that doing so will allow me to reach the miles.

My experience is that many people strive to make big leaps ahead ignoring the inches to zoom forward in miles and then they burn out, or even run into obstacles that move them backwards putting them in a worse position than where they started; now having to make up even more ground over a longer period of time.

The consistently gained inches would have gotten them to their destination with fewer setbacks, and ultimately in the same or shorter amount of time.

It takes lots of energy and risk to take the chance to leap forward to where you want to go in life. Those who think this way think they’re special, that they will beat the odds (if that’s you and you do beat the odds, then good for you), but few ever do.

However, putting in regular effort to take calculated risks that allow steady progress will ensure you actually move in the direction you want. It will also leave you open to unexpected opportunities that you’ll be better positioned to take advantage of – opportunities that could enhance your journey and/or even change its direction for the better.

Speed does not always equal clarity, effectiveness, or efficiency.

It’s a classic tortoise and the hare story, but until it hits you personally in your life you won’t appreciate the tortoise.  I encourage you to re-examine the tortoise.
