Do less to meet your goals

Well, I’m getting to that point again…Expand, expand, expand, need to contract…

What am I talking about?

Maybe this happens to you too, I’ll explain:

I tend to focus on what I want to accomplish for the year and back up from that to determine what I need to accomplish each month, and, more specifically need to, address each week. However, I’m often bombarded with requests from others that are opportunities that align with my career aspirations so I say, YES, to taking on those opportunities.

Then, I step back after a bit to review my monthly progress towards my annual goals, and I’m not as far along towards my goals as I intended to be at this point in time.

What happened?

I got out of balance when it came to saying YES to additional opportunities that can be beneficial for my career, but may not be beneficial towards me meeting my annual goals.

So over time, I’m expanding what I’m working on but not all of what I’m working on is aligned to contribute to my annual goal – my main focus for this year.

And because when I set annual goals I’m thinking on a larger scale about how those annual goals contribute to where I want my career to be in the next 3 to 5 years, I have to trust that concentrating on my annual goals now will actually accelerate my ability to end up where I want to be in 3 to 5 years.

It becomes clear, I need to contract down what I’m working on to only those things that help me reach my annual goals. I need to reduce the additional things I take on by saying NO to protect my 3 to 5 year growth.

That’s where I’m currently at – I need to begin unloading, or at least gaining a better balance of the unnecessary work that, even though it may ultimately be good for my career, is not good for helping me meet my annual goals.
