Spread the love

Do you get into celebrating Valentine’s Day?

My wife and I don’t really. I mean, we acknowledge it, we try to have fun with our kids around it, perhaps if we’ve been able to secure a babysitter (not likely this year) we might go out to dinner, but nothing really beyond that.

It’s not that we dislike Valentine’s Day, it’s more so that we don’t need a single day to suggest that we be kind and loving towards one another. “How about just being kind and loving on a regular basis,” is our thought.

There is so much division among people today that we probably need more than one day to highlight that love is the best remedy anyway.

...and I say that because, like all other flawed humans, I too need the reminder.

From a societal standpoint, Valentine’s Day has a connotation of romantic love, but really, to find even a spec of good in someone, anyone, everyone -- especially those you disagree with -- and choose to love that spec of good in that person vs. all the things you might disagree with about them or their views, is powerful...and healing...for you more so than them (hint: that's the main idea in the act of forgiveness). Essentially, it's the old adage, “love your enemies.” Now, I’m not suggesting being a pushover. It’s not okay to be bullied, or do the bullying, nor is it okay to allow differences to escalate to violence -- that’s actually quite the opposite of what I’m talking about here.

What I’m suggesting is that for your own self-investment, self-improvement, self-empowerment, what you can control is your ability to focus on the good in people, even the smallest crumb of good if that’s all you can uncover from your perspective.

Identifying even one small aspect of good in everyone that you encounter -- a morsel that you can identify with, love, respect, and/or appreciate -- leads to a more humane level of tolerance.

The more you do that, and the more you can help others to do something similar, the larger the ripple effect of positivity that will spread across your family, community, network, and even to strangers.

----------Updates:Here is a new instrumental song I wrote and produced called, "Heartbeat." If you have interest take a listen here.A bit about the song:"Heartbeat"  is about pondering life, and love (gained or lost), and finding solace as you close your eyes to concentrate on your breathing and your heartbeat.I also created the cover artwork for the song, and am sharing a time lapse video (released today) of that artwork creation process set to the song. Feel free to watch:"Heartbeat" will be available on all major streaming platforms by the end of February. Stay tuned.----------
