Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

Have you checked in with yourself on your goals for 2018?I know, it’s not that far into the year. Still, progress has hopefully been made already…but how do you know?Tracking, measuring, doing a monthly look-back…there are as many methods to understand your progress on your goals as there are names for those methods. However, don’t let that intimidate you. Understanding your progress toward your goals and your self-improvement doesn’t have to be overly complicated. In fact, you’re more likely to actually keep track and thoughtfully examine where you’ve been and where you’re headed to determine whether or not you’re on track to hit your goal, if it’s a simple. If you do what I do, which is to identify my goal and journal daily about my Actions and Victories towards that goal, it’s easy to look back at the previous month’s worth of writing/documenting and highlight those Actions and Victories I’ve written about.More specifically, I date each journal entry so it’s easy to go back and take a look at the previous month’s progress. Then I use an [A] and a [V] in brackets next to my description of my goal Action, usually a task I plan to take and/or my Victory – something I accomplished toward my goal.I take a highlighter marker and highlight every instance in the previous month where I had an [A] or a [V] in brackets and create a summary statement or two in my journal, labeled January Goal Progress (or whatever the previous month is) to have a quick reference of my goal progress each month. This is a pretty straightforward approach, which makes it fairly easy to identify whether or not I’m getting where I want to go each month toward my goal. This is what works for me. It may not work for you, or you may tweak this approach to make it work better for you.The idea is to regularly take action on the daily tasks that need to happen to reach your goal, briefly celebrate your daily progress when you accomplish your Action items (your Victories) and have a way to reflect on those Actions and Victories throughout the year to have a bigger picture view of how much closer you are to reaching your goal.…and…if you’ve determined that you’re not currently on track at the moment to be able to reach your goal, it’s easier to course-correct now while you still have plenty of 2018 left to go.Be sure to check in with yourself regularly. I want you to have success!Have a great rest of your week!
