How to live rich
Last weekend we had a really nice send off for my grandfather who recently passed. It was a nice celebration of life with lots of family and good memories.
Fortunately, or unfortunately (however you look at it), the world doesn’t stop turning. That said, I’ve been back to the day-to-day grind this week. I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that I like the grind - the pursuit of achieving something that wasn’t in my grasp previously (no matter how large or small).
In part, that idea of embracing the grind is helping me to process my grandfather’s passing. He was a life-loving guy who cared hard and worked hard at everything. I think that’s how he ended up living a full, purposeful, and rich life. That’s what I want, and I’m grateful to have had an example like that in my life.
But what does it take to pursue a life rich in purposeful experiences that align with our values?
First off, I think you have to understand what you value. This can take a bit of soul-searching, but it’s worth doing a self-examination to identify, and even write down, the things you value in life. For example, I value God, family, creative/professional pursuits and all the people I meet who impact me, and those I (hopefully) positively impact along the way.
Understanding what you value can serve as a guiding principle for everything you do in life. For example, if I make “X” decision does it align with, or oppose my values? If it aligns, perhaps it’s a good decision. On the other hand, if it opposes my values, maybe I need to come up with an alternative solution that better aligns with my values.
Unfortunately in life, many decisions can be complex and fall into a gray area without a clear cut right or wrong answer. That’s why understanding what you personally value is so vital to your own confidence in how you live your life - you can test your decisions against your values to determine if you’re on track towards living your best, most purposeful, and rich life.
