Reflections of the way life used to be

Well, I want to thank everyone who came out to the music performance I had the pleasure of being a part of last Friday night.  I got to perform with three other very talented singer/songwriters,

,

and

at

in Verona, WI.

We played a songwriter-in-the-round sort of set up -- all acoustic, no PA system or microphones.  Each songwriter played one of their own tunes while the rest of us musicians joined in on the songs with spontaneous musical additions.  After each song we rotated to the next musician who played one of their tunes that we all participated in, and so on throughout the evening.

It was extremely fun and laid back.  The place was packed (though it’s not a large place), but it was a very cozy and inviting crowd who seemed to really be enjoying the atmosphere they were helping create.

I share this with you because it’s important to reflect on various events and moments in our lives soon after they’ve happened.

I like to journal about them.  There are a couple of good reasons for documenting my experiences this way:

First, it helps me ‘extend’ the moment.  By focusing on it to write about it in my journal I’m able to re-live it in my mind while it’s still a bit fresh.  Also, by capturing it in written form, later I can come back to this entry to re-read it when I’m feeling down and need a quick recall of a happier moment.

Second, writing down my thoughts about the event serves as a learning tool.  Why was the night such a success?  What about it worked well?  How can I keep some of those things in mind for future events?  Who were some of the new people I met?  How can I be sure to keep in touch with them?

That second reason for documenting my experiences is the one that ends up serving me in my creative and business pursuits.  It’s my own small feedback loop to ensure I’m building on the positives and shedding the negatives, or those things that aren’t serving me well.

How do you reflect on various moments in your life?  Hit reply and let me know.

Have a great week!
