Intentional work wins
I thought I was busy last month. It turns out I’m busier now. How about you?Myself and others I work with / for, are too. We’re all feeling the pressure of the calendar year ending and the need to get all sorts of things done in an ultra compressed timeline, now that we’re in the 4th quarter of the year. Those timelines are further compressed as we all try to navigate each other's time off for the holidays.
It makes me anxious and overwhelmed. Hit reply and tell me how it makes you feel.In the past, I used to work myself up and spend needless energy worrying about the “what-if” scenarios — primarily, “what if I can’t get everything done and I let people down?”
Now, I try to release the anticipatory anxiety by letting go of too many expectations. I cannot control what other people will think of me or my work. I can concentrate on doing the best job I'm able to with the resources I have within the time frame I have to do it. Nowadays, I even preemptively do my best to communicate that up front to the parties involved (managing others’ expectations can help too).
Then, counter to what you might think would be useful, I try to slow down my productivity. I try to hyper-prioritize what needs to be done and concentrate on only one priority at a time until it’s done.In practice, this includes a lot of breaks, staring off into space while I think through my challenge at hand, clearing my brain by changing my scenery, reading books and article’s related to the topic I’m working on, generally just giving my brain space to work through it all.
From the outside, it may appear that I should be doing more, taking more action, or hustling more to reach my deadline. However, throwing myself into the busywork that makes it look like I’m on the fast track to reaching my deadlines early tends to lead to less than quality work, and the need to spend more time following the deadline making requested improvements. A step that likely could have been avoided by being more pragmatic.
Deliberate and intentional work wins over a frantic rush job every time.So give yourself some grace. You're on top of what you need to be on top of, or nows the time to ultra-prioritize and slow down to win big by the end of the year. You've got this!
