Take stock of your values

It’s sad, I have a friend who is essentially dying right now. There’s still hope, medically and spiritually, to help him pull through, but the odds are stacked against him right now. Addiction sucks.

While my thoughts and prayers are with my friend, our mutual circle of friends, and his family, moments like this make me take stock of what’s important in my own life.

That’s what I want to encourage today. Take a moment – find a quiet 5 minutes – and simply reflect on what you care about and why. Write it down if you need to. Come up with 3, 5, 7 things.

Then take a very brief moment – a couple of seconds – and say, “Thank you!” Be grateful for those people and the fortunate circumstances that currently exist in your life that are important to you. I guarantee you, when you shift your brain into a state of gratitude your mindset can’t be negative in that moment. It just isn’t possible. That’s a slight boost of positive hope in this often tough and stressful life.

Now, take another 5 minutes as you come off that grateful mindset to think about your personal values. Those concepts in life that you consistently strive for to stay focused towards being a better version of yourself.  These values are often achievable but constantly aspirational.

Take a moment to write out a few personal values that you can consistently come back to when you are unsure of your current purpose or way forward. Success is often achieved by consistently actioning your core fundamentals.

Here are a few of my personal and aspirational values. I even make sure these are on my professional resume.

  • Family first

  • Be kind, be human(e)

  • Have integrity

  • Creativity is magic

  • Present solutions, not problems

  • Have a bias towards action

  • Always be learning, improving
