Give more, receive more

Happy, almost, Halloween!

Anyone have any last minute costume ideas?  Hit reply and let me know. My family procrastinates on Halloween costumes.

In a professional realm, do you give to get?

I ask this question because if you find that you’re not getting as much traction in your personal career growth as you would like then you might need to check your professional “giving" to “receiving” ratio.

To make positive progress towards just about anything we want to accomplish, we have to take action to do things that propel us closer to our goal.

You might think of this in terms of what action you can personally and directly take that relates to reaching your goal. For example, shooting 1 how-to video and writing 1 related blog post this week to help increase your reach to new audiences online.

That’s something you can personally do to “give” to yourself the circumstances that can help you “receive” more eyeballs and maybe even new business. However, that effort could be amplified to work even better for you if you “give” to others to help them achieve their goals and by association, or in return (and not always in the ways you might expect), you gain further traction towards your own goals than you could on your own.

How?

Let’s take the same scenario -- creating 1 video and 1 blog post this week around a particular topic that helps you reach more people to reach your professional goal.

Instead of simply producing this information on your own, how can you help promote a thought-leader in your space by featuring that person in your content?

Doing so can add credibility to the focus of your content, you give a big shout out to a colleague in your industry you admire and respect and tag that person in the content, and they will then be more likely to share your content out to their audience as a way to promote themselves.

You’ve now recognized a colleague, thought-leader in your professional space, who has boosted your content’s reach to a larger audience than it would have reached without them -- they win, and you win.  Give more, receive more.
