The chaos of transition

Happy Friday!

The whole getting-into-a-new-year-routine shouldn’t be that hard, but lately I feel like it has been. As I reflect on why I’m feeling that way, I’m thinking it has to do with the chaos of transition.

What I mean by that is, any and all transitions - from one year to the next, from last year’s goals to this year’s, from old routines related to last year’s pursuits to this year’s, etc. - have an element of chaos.

Transitions usually involve a new, perhaps, nebulous idea, theme, or goal that you have to figure out how you’ll organize yourself, your mind, and your actions around to pursue. That means unlearning old habits from previous routines and learning new ones to fit your new path.

That can cause anxiety, frustration, doubt, and fear of the unknown - how to approach this new path, what if it doesn’t work, what if I’m ridiculed, what if others don’t like it, what if, what if, what if?

To help ease the chaos of transition I encourage you to examine what if this year is a success, what if you achieve your goals this year, what if you set up personal boundaries that help your sanity, what if you play the “what if” game with positive outcomes?

In the chaos of transition, we almost immediately gravitate towards negative predictive thinking. That is, playing the “what if” game with negative outcomes. However, like most things in life, what you concentrate on, expands.

So if you focus your energy on potentially negative outcomes, some, if not all, of those outcomes will come true.

The good news is, the more you recognize when you’re beginning to play the “what if” game with negative outcomes, if you pause and think through - or better yet, write down - one or two positive outcomes that could happen for every negative outcome you come up with, you can do a better job of cancelling out those negative thoughts.

If you’ve written down those positive outcomes, take five minutes each morning to re-read them. They become affirmations of sorts, and the more you focus your energy on positive outcomes, the more you will actually achieve positive outcomes.

Stay positive. Stay healthy. Be kind.Sincerely,Nick VenturellaCreative Professional, andco-founder of Eleven Music Career CenterNickVenturella.comnickVmusic.netFacebookYouTubePatreon
