Hold yourself accountable to meet your goals
In the last couple weeks we talked about setting goals for the new year, which is par for the course this time of year.
Today, I want to talk about working your action plan and staying accountable toward meeting your goals.
So, as we described last week, you have goals and a basic framework of how to reach those goals:
Break down your larger annual goals into
monthly,
weekly,
and even daily goals...that you can reach in a shorter timeframe to add up to your larger annual goal over the course of the year.
But how do you keep yourself accountable to actually achieve your daily, weekly and monthly goals?
The short answer is discipline. However, there are additional ways to help yourself.
Here's what I'm proposing: identify your daily, weekly or monthly goals and list them out. Try to keep the description of those goals to 1 to 2 sentences.
Identify between 3 to 5 maybe 7 people in your inner circle of friends, family and/or professionals who are supportive of your endeavor and close enough to you that you trust their opinion and value what they have to say.
Then reach out to them via email, via phone, social media; whatever works for you.
Let them know about your goals your daily, weekly and/or monthly goals -- whatever you want help being accountable with.
Then assign each of your "accountability team" a date in the near future to put on their calendar at which time they will check in with you and ask how you're doing on your daily, weekly or monthly goals.
This isn't full proof, and you have to trust that your friends are going to help you by remembering to check in, but it is a simple way to have others help keep you accountable toward reaching your goals.
Part of the idea is that as you tell others and get it outside of yourself you're putting these goals out into the world and essentially committing them to yourself by telling others about them.
So, your assignment this week is to share your goals with those you trust and set up your "accountability team."
