Getting Creative in 2017
Happy New Years everyone!Did you make a New Year's resolution?I don't really believe in New Years resolutions.Typically people make resolutions too broad in scope, which allows them an easy out if they choose not to fulfill it.My opinion: goals are good, resolutions are not.Keep reading, and I’ll share my 2017 goals with you and how they can benefit you. Also, please hit reply and tell me about your 2017 goals. I love reading your emails! For me, this year, I have creative project goals, and my measure of success will be how much or many of them I’m able to complete.I am focusing this year more on creation than monetization. A focus on creation is the way I used to always approach my creative endeavors. However, as I got older and took on more responsibility I needed to pay bills. I started to strategize more about how my creative projects could make money. This was in part because I needed to.I still definitely need to monetize how I invest my time and energy, however, I'm in a spot where I realize that because my current day job requires my creative muscle to be at peak performance I need to get back to being a creative machine. To do that, I need to immerse myself in constant creative projects that force me to expand my mindset beyond just practical means to an end -- a.k.a. income. The funny thing is, in my experience, when I have successfully focused on the creative first it ends up monetizing well, often to my surprise, and often in unexpected ways. This is true of anything you care to put effort into.Everything good in my life has come from focusing on good creative work and then promoting that good quality work. That goes for professional day jobs I’ve had, down to my own music and visual art that are me primarily scratching my own creative itch because I can (and emotionally need to). This year’s focus is not to say that in the recent past I have not been putting out quality work, but I don't think I have been pushing myself to expand my creative horizons as a result of only doing what's necessary to make my creativity make money. Now, I want to push past the creative barriers to do fun, interesting projects and figure out the monetization along the way or after the fact.I plan to share my progress throughout my creative projects with you on my blog, on my social channels, periodically in this newsletter and on my Patreon page (this is something new for me -- your support is greatly appreciated).Personally, I always enjoy reading, experiencing, watching hearing about a creative person's journey through their projects almost more than the end result of what they produce. In doing so, I feel like I learn a lot about other ways to approach the creative process, which in turn helps my own creative process. That’s what I hope you gain from following along, and I want you to share your struggles and progress along your journey this year by hitting reply to any of these email newsletters and sharing with me. To the extent I can, I will address your thoughts to provide something useful for all of us (as well as give you a bit of free promotion for your own endeavors). My creative journey, as well as any, is translatable to other fields and industries. Understanding how to work through projects or processes for your job or for your business is a creative process whether or not you consider yourself a creative person.Below is what I plan to focus and document progress on this year...(get more in-depth descriptions on my Patreon page)Overarching main goal themes:1.
