Know Your Limits and Increase Productivity
I always feel like the first month of a new year is super busy.
Part of that is likely something I do to myself. I want to get the new year off to a successful start so I tend to overcommit myself with projects of my own making, client projects, various work-related meetings and even weekend family gatherings.
Then when I’m in the thick of the month, about now (half way through the month), I realize the pace is grueling, and I’m just plain tired.
That brings me to my point, it’s important to know your limits before you hit your limit.
If I keep going once I know I’m about to reach my limit (where I need to rest) I will drive myself too hard and eventually get sick and lose even more ground than if I just took a day or so to relax and rest.
I know at this point in the month that I still need to hustle to meet my monthly goals, but I’m also sensing I’m close to my limit of busyness. When I get to that limit, I need to slow down, step back, take a deep breath rest (sleep) and relax. It doesn’t have to be for long, but I definitely need to do a quick recharge of the batteries (and I’m not talking about more caffeine).
Once I’ve rested and allowed myself to not worry about anything for a short time (easier said than done), I tend to feel ready to jump back into all my projects and engagements.
I think it’s really important to know yourself -- how you work and where your limits are. Doing so, is a very specific way to work smarter rather than harder. Although, our society doesn’t always see that perspective on the subject.
How do you know when you’re reaching your limit? Do you pay attention to yourself? Do you understand how to rejuvenate your energy so you can start again refreshed, recharged and ready to go?
I definitely encourage you to learn your own patterns. It’s one of the best ways to get the most productivity out of yourself.
