2021 is a positive opportunity

Happy new year!  We made it to 2021 and not even a full month in and it’s been quite eventful.

Today, I simply want to plant the seed with you that 2021 can be full of positive opportunities for you if you’re focused on making it this year a positive opportunity.

Just like many things in life, your mindset often follows the 80/20 rule. That is, 20% of what you think makes up 80% of your mood and actions. This affects your attitude, productivity, and even your physical and mental health.

So how do you remain positive and productive towards your goals when it seems like there is so much strife and unrest in the world?

Well, I certainly don’t have the answer to solve the world’s, or even our country’s strife and unrest, but the reality is there has always been and will always be strife and unrest in the world. I’m not suggesting to ignore it, but how you deal with it is crucial.

You can choose to channel the energy and emotions that arise constructively by focusing on how you can use it to positively improve yourself. Ultimately, you are what you have the most control over.

You can choose how the world and its events affect you, your mood, and actions. I’m not saying it’s always easy to do, but it is certainly possible, and we would likely all be better off to make the individual effort.

Positively invest in YOU and your investment will overflow to others

Here’s what I mean, I get upset at a lot of things I see/read/hear on social media, on the news, and in print, but I know that if I concentrate on my own goals with intention to positively affect myself, both my family and immediate community will be affected by my actions (directly and somewhat indirectly).

Again, I’m not saying to ignore other things going on, but if you’re able to put most of your energy into areas you can control and have a positive influence then the likelihood of good things happening is greater.

A thought on why differences escalate

This is not about my goals and values, or what anyone thinks might be right or just. No, I’m talking about simply choosing to be human(e). Being kind to others, everyone, even those who share different beliefs -- it’s absolutely okay to have differences of opinions and even heated dialogue, but it’s important to keep in mind that we’re all flawed humans trying to navigate the world.

I’ve found that typically disagreements come out of different interpretations of facts and fear of the unknown in terms of how others will react or act out based on their interpretations of those facts. The anxious anticipation of that unknown is what often leaves people in bad situations that can easily turn negative and physically hurtful.

We’re all people trying to navigate our way through life; through the same human condition. The extent to which we each experience that human condition -- positively or negatively -- is up to us.

Make positive forward progress

That is always easier said than done as many of us are scarred by previous experiences that have left us with negative baggage to deal with. Baggage that can unfortunately cloud our vision of the future if we’re not careful. Baggage that can inhibit our ability to see our fellow humans as humans who are not that different than ourselves...

But baggage or not, we can make a choice to invest in ourselves in positive, constructive, non-violent ways that will lead to more optimism, opportunities, and positive outcomes for ourselves and those closest to us.

Cheers to making 2021 a good year!
