Marketing tactics vs. strategy

Hi ,

In this edition of the GrowLoop newsletter I want to engage with you to build a deeper relationship.

I tend to meet a lot of small business owners, just like you, many of whom are solopreneurs (running their company with no employees), and I like to sit and learn about their business, their wins and.  I love doing this, as I can sometimes offer an outside perspective (outside of their perspective that is), which can often spark new thinking in a new direction.

I’m passionate about this kind of interaction because I think it takes a lot of courage, motivation and hard work to decide to go into business for yourself, and I’m always amazed and inspired by the journey of you and the rest of your fellow passionate entrepreneurs.  In many ways I feel like I have so much to learn -- every business owner I meet, even if they’re hiring me to coach them, becomes another mentor to me.

That’s really what GrowLoop is about -- helping entrepreneurs like you gain a new perspective on your marketing approach.  The idea is to work through hurdles and create a safe environment to share resourceful and innovative ideas that can inspire further motivation, action and accountability toward your own dreams and success while staying grounded in solid expertise.

I’d like to learn more about your business.  What are your wins and challenges?  What would you like to see discussed in this newsletter?  Feel free to email me and let me know.  I want to be a resource for you, and I want our time here to be worthwhile and useful, yet comfortable and casual, like talking with a trusted friend -- sometimes that’s exactly what you need to get charged enough to face another day.

You’re not alone in your entrepreneurial journey, and regardless of whether or not we ever do business together, I want us to share this time and space as a useful reprieve from your usual day-to-day work perspective.  Sound good?

I did want to share a specific topic today:  Tactics vs. Strategy

Why do we get caught up in spending time and money on “marketing” tools that often don’t really help increase lead generation and sales -- isn’t that the goal of marketing?  Yet we try new trendy tactics that claim to be the best thing since sliced bread, rather, than developing a strategy that we improve over time toward regular, reliable results.

I think the “quick solution” happens because most solopreneurs are busy and they’re looking for that one marketing tactic that is affordable, and a “sure-fire” win in terms of generating the leads and sales they want.  All without really having to do much, if any, work to achieve great results.

I know that doesn’t describe you, but it saddens me when I see well-meaning solopreneurs with little funds and time to invest in “sure-fire” marketing tactics only to be disappointed when things don’t pan out as they had hoped. The truth is you have to do the work and that usually means putting in the time and effort to think things through toward the success you want.

Part of the problem usually is that such solopreneurs are seeking a marketing strategy in one tactic.

What I’m trying to say is, don’t confuse marketing tactics with a marketing strategy.  Blogging is a great marketing tactic by itself, but when blogging is purposefully pieced together with your website, social networking and email marketing, over time you can dial in which blog posts, marketed in which social networks drive the most traffic to your website where you have a free white paper that visitors can download by signing up on your email list -- that’s a better example of how blogging fits into a broader strategy.

What marketing tactics have you tried that could have worked out better had they been tied to a broader strategy?  What did you learn from that experience?  Feel free to email me responses or simply ponder those questions for your own benefit.

That’s it for now, until next time.  Nick Venturella, CPC Owner / Certified Professional Coach GrowLoop - coaching & marketing  864-256-0588 [email protected] www.growloop.com  P.S.
